Biography of Ruben Hernandez
He begins his musical training in Cuba at the age of 10 years old, in 1994, at Manuel Samuel music school.
A few years later, he follows his studies at the provincial Conservatory where he will graduate with a music diploma.
Ruben also graduates with an electronical technic diploma, in 2003, after four years of study at the “5 de septiembre” school. His musician life also begins during this period.
At 16, he starts to play with several bands.
A year later, he signs his first contract with a septet of traditional cuban music called “Union”. This band will bring him a lot of experience and will help him in his musical development.
Later, Ruben joins “Charanga Cienfueguera” orchestra, but also “Son del Sur”, “Septeto Bella Costa”, or “Grupo Baison”.
In 2007, Ruben moves to Belgium where he plays with several bands of cuban music as “Rey Cabrera y sus amigos”, “Chamaquiando”, “Grupo Contrabando”, “Tomi y su Timbalight”, “Tumbao cubano”,…
In 2011, he is accepted at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in the jazz section where he will graduate with a jazz master in 2017.
During this period, Ruben has the opportunity to learn from great musicians and masters like Michel Paré, Arnould Massart, Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, Fabrice Alleman, Phil Abraham, etc. Nowadays, Ruben is part of Dat Mess’ quintet.
He is also working is his own project, RHG Project. In this project, which fusion afrocuban and jazz music, he acts as arranger-composer and trumpet player.
